presentations from both cities in Monaco on Friday afternoon.

The 2018 Winter Olympics will take place in
PyeongChang after the South Korean city won an overwhelming victory
in Wednesday's vote by International Olympic Committee members.
PyeongChang won in the first round of voting in the IOC session in
Durban, against German bidder Munich and the French resort of Annecy.
LONDON TO BID FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
UK Athletics has confirmed it intends to bid to bring
the 2017 World Athletics Championships to London. London will be the
first city in the running to host the biennial event and a formal bid
to stage the event at the Olympic Stadium must be submitted to the
International Association of Athletics Federations by September 1.
FIFA WORLD CUP VENUES ANNOUNCED
The 2018 World Cup will be organised in Russia as
England's bid fails. Qatar is surprising winner for 2022.
Beijing has been chosen to host the 2015 IAAF World Championships.
The competition will see athletics return to the
iconic Bird's Nest Stadium in the Chinese capital where the 2008
Olympic Games were held
GAMES COSTS RISE BY £81MILLION
The cost of staging the 2014 Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow has risen by £81million to £454 million, it has
been confirmed. The Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and the
Games Organising Committee have been forced to plug a funding gap
caused by an increase in broadcasting and staffing costs. The
announcement follows a budget review by the organising committee, who
put the initial cost at £373million. Most of the extra cost
(£59million) will be met by the Scottish Government, with £9
million more coming from the council and £13million from the
organising committee.
LONDON OLYMPICS
The International Olympic Committee have given their
approval to London's plans to change the marathon route for the 2012
Games. Organisers say the decision to move the route so that it
starts and ends in the Mall in central London, rather than finish in
the Olympic Stadium in the east of the capital as was originally
planned, is one of the toughest they have had to take. The change
means Tower Hamlets will no longer have two miles of the marathon
running through the borough and that has led to protests from MPs and
council leaders. |

HELSINKI TO HOST EURO CHAMPIONSHIPS
Helsinki will host the European Athletics
Championships for a third time in 2012, which will also be the first
occasion the event switches to a two-year cycle. The changeover
following next summer's championships in Barcelona will see the
programme in Helsinki taking place from June 27 until July 1, while
dropping marathon and walking events from the schedule because of the
close proximity to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. |
