1860: The first Open Championship of golf was played at Prestwick. Eight men took part over three rounds of the 12-hole course and the winner was Willie Park senior, who took a total of 174 strokes. Favourite Old Tom Morris was runner-up.
1995: A samba band and 5,000 fans turned out at the Riverside Stadium to welcome new midfield signing Juninho, the Brazilian player of the year, who cost Middlesbrough £4.75million from Sao Paulo.
1998: Fulham boss Kevin Keegan took his spending to £11million with the signing of Bristol Rovers striker Barry Hayles for £2million.
2004: The Zimbabwe Cricket Union were cleared of racism by the International Cricket Council and had their Test status restored

MOTOR RACING
English driver Dan Wheldon died during Sunday's Las Vegas Indy 300. The 33-year-old was taken to hospital in a helicopter after his car was involved in a massive 15-vehicle crash, his car flying over another on lap 13.
EQUESTRIAN
Mary King claimed the biggest single award in eventing - 150,000 US dollars (£95,000) - as she became HSBC FEI Classics champion. The British rider clinched the title in the final leg of the event at Etoiles des Pau with a magnificent clear jumping round on Imperial Cavalier. She is the first woman to win the title since the series started in 2008 and keeps it in British hands for the fourth consecutive year.
