PARALYMPICS
Great Britain's Helene Raynsford
became the first Paralympic rowing gold medallist in history with an
emphatic victory in the women's single skulls in Beijing today. The
28-year-old completed the 1000-metre race at Shunyi Olympic Rowing
Park in six minutes 12.93 seconds, 12.51 seconds clear of the field
in the first ever Paralympic rowing final.
It was fitting Britain completed their Laoshan
Velodrome haul with victory in the men's team sprint, with Darren
Kenny, Jody Cundy and Mark Bristow emulating their Olympic
counterparts Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Jamie Staff, who began the
gold rush on August 15.
Sarah Storey and Anthony Kappes - with Storey's
husband Barney as his tandem pilot - also triumphed, while at the
National Aquatics Centre Heather Frederiksen
won the women's S8 100 metres backstroke and the men's 4x100m
freestyle team claimed a third straight victory.
Jon Fox added silver and Louise Watkin and Sean Fraser
bronze at the Water Cube while equestrian rider Felicity Coulthard
was second in Hong Kong.
However, the gold remains elusive for the athletics
team after wheelchair racer David Weir saw his world record go as he
was beaten to silver in the T54 men's 400 metres at the Bird's Nest Stadium.
The haul took Britain's gold medal tally to 21 and 43
medals in all, second only to China in the medal table - the hosts
have 24 golds and 77 total medals - and more than halfway towards the
target set by UK Sport. And the 11-day event is just four days old.
David Roberts' quest to become Britain's most
successful Paralympian of all time may have to go on even if the
swimmer takes five gold medals in Beijing to surpass Dame Tanni
Grey-Thompson's mark of 11.
ATHLETICS
Olympic 400 metres bronze medallist Natasha Danvers
scored an encouraging win ahead of American champion Tiffany Williams
at the IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Zagreb on Tuesday night. Danvers
outpaced the US champion with a solid victory in 54.67 seconds.
CYCLING
Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen overcame a last-gasp
mistake to win the fourth stage of the Tour of Britain in a dramatic
finish in Stoke.
The Team Columbia rider, who finished 71st in the
Olympic road race, appeared to lose ground on LPR Brakes' Giairo
Ermeti on the uphill finish but still had something left to retake
the lead in the dash for the line. |
