CYCLING
Andre Greipel claimed the final stage of the Vuelta a
Espana with Alejandro Valverde finishing among the main group to
clinch overall glory in Madrid. Caisse d'Epargne rider Valverde took
the race leader's golden jersey 13 days ago and held it right to the
end in the Spanish capital following the finale of seven six-kilometre
circuits in Madrid city centre.
ATHLETICS
Tyson Gay produced a blistering display to lower his
American 100 metres record at the Shanghai Grand Prix on Sunday. Gay
got out of his blocks slowly but recovered to roar ahead of Asafa
Powell and improve his mark to 9.69 seconds with his Jamaican rival
second in 9.85 and fellow American Darvis Patton third with a time of
9.89.
Former world half-marathon champion Martin Lel
signalled he is back in superb condition after injury with a
brilliant victory at the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday. Lel, who was
forced to pull out of chasing a fourth title at the London Marathon
in April due to a hip injury, showed he is back to full fitness with
a fine winning time of 59 minutes 32 seconds to regain the title he
won in 2007.
JUDO
Euan Burton and Sarah Adlington both struck gold as
Britain signed off the GB Judo World Cup in style at Birmingham's
National Indoor Arena. Sarah Clark and Kimberley Renicks had also
each won their respective weight divisions yesterday, when there were
another three bronzes as the hosts went some way to make up for a
disappointing World Championships, where the British team brought
back just one medal. |
