On This Day in Sport (12 September 2008):

1885: Arbroath set a British soccer record by beating Bon Accord 36-0 in the Scottish Cup, thanks in part to 13 goals from centre-forward John Petrie. Dundee Harp ran them close on the same day, by beating Aberdeen Rovers 35-0.
1913: Jesse Owens was born. The American athlete once set five world records in one day but is best remembered for his deeds at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin where he won four gold medals - in the 100metres and 200m, the long jump and the sprint relay.
1951: `Sugar' Ray Robinson regained his world welterweight title by beating Briton Randolph Turpin, in the `Fight of the Century'. Two months earlier, Turpin had caused one of boxing's biggest ever shocks by beating Robinson.
1991: In their first match under new coach Graham Taylor, England beat Hungary 1-0 at Wembley with Gary Lineker, named captain for the first time, scoring the only goal.
2004: Roger Federer won his third grand slam title of the year with a 6-0 7-6 (7/3) 6-0 victory over Lleyton Hewitt in the US Open final.
2005: England regained the Ashes after drawing final Test against Australia at the Oval and winning the series 2-1.
2006: Manchester City's Ben Thatcher was suspended for eight games by the Football Association, with a further 15-match ban suspended for two years after being found guilty of smashing his forearm into the face of Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes during the goalless draw on August 23.
2006: Lancashire all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was appointed England captain for the ICC Champions Trophy in India and the Ashes tour in Australia in the absence of the injured Michael Vaughan.

PARALYMPICS
Sam Hynd struck gold as Great Britain won their fourth Paralympic Games title of the day at the National Aquatics Centre in Beijing.
Rachel Morris, David Stone and Sarah Storey all triumphed as the dominance of Britain's cyclists spilled out from the velodrome to the track before Hynd won the first final of the evening at the Water Cube.
Moments after Hynd's triumph, Britain's boccia team won gold at the China National Convention Center Fencing Hall. Nigel Murray, Dan Bentley, Zoe Robinson and David Smith outplayed Portugal in the boules-like sport for wheelchair users with cerebral palsy or related neurological conditions to triumph 8-4. Earlier, Shelly Woods erased the disappointment of handing back a silver medal to win bronze in women's T54 5,000m.
