over Israel in Liverpool on Saturday.
ATHLETICS
Olympic champion Barbora Spotakova set a new women's
javelin world record in Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon. Spotakova's
record-breaking throw of 72.28metres came in the first round of the
IAAF/VTB Bank World Athletics Final. The 27-year-old Czech secured a
bonus of 100,000 US dollars (£55,000) by surpassing the previous
record of 71.70m achieved by Cuba's Osleidys Menendez at the 2005
World Championships in Helsinki.
PARALYMPICS
Archers Danielle Brown
and John Stubbs were triumphant
before cyclists David Stone and Darren
Kenny - with his fourth gold - took the 2012 hosts one
behind China in the medal standings.
Matt Walker added a
silver medal in the Water Cube, while fellow swimmers Sascha Kindred,
Jim Anderson and Fran Williamson won bronze, and sprinters Ian Jones
and Hazel Simpson, archer Mel Clarke and wheelchair tennis pair Peter
Norfolk and Jamie Burdekin were also third. Britain trail China by 12
golds in the medal table and have 81 medals in all to the hosts' 130.
Weir made his
Paralympics debut aged 17 in Atlanta but took a break from the sport
and missed the Sydney Games before returning in Greece. The world
champion at 100m, 400m and 1,500m, Weir has entered five races here
and was expected to be British athletics' leading man despite having
a gruelling 14-race programme, which has now been extended to 15
races. The 29-year-old from Surrey, led from the start to cross the
line first in one minute 36.61 seconds and thought he had delivered
the athletics team's first gold, triumphing at the third time of
asking - in his third event, at his third Games. |
