1976: Derby became the first British club to score 12 goals in a European match when they beat Finn Harps of Ireland 12-0 in a UEFA Cup tie.
1984: Lester Piggott broke Frank Buckle's record of 27 Classic wins when he rode Commanche Run to victory in the St Leger.
1985: Tony Jacklin's European team inflicted defeat on the Americans in the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years at The Belfry.
2002: Glamorgan won their first major trophy for five years as they beat Kent by four runs at Canterbury to secure the Norwich Union title.
2003: England Test batsman and wicketkeeper Alec Stewart retired from first-class cricket.
2004: Mark Hughes appointed manager of Blackburn after leaving post with Wales.
2005: Frank Hadden was confirmed as Scotland's new coach by Scottish Rugby Football Union after a spell as caretaker.

PARALYMPICS
Swimmer David Roberts faces a battle to add to his Beijing bounty of four gold medals after Great Britain's men's 4x100 metres medley relay team squeezed through to tonight's Paralympics final at the National Aquatics Center. The 28-year-old from Pontypridd won his 11th Paralympic gold in the men's S7 50m freestyle last night to equal Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson's haul.
ATHLETICS
Commonwealth champion Kelly Sotherton finished runner-up in the heptathlon at the IAAF World Combined Events meeting in Talence. Sotherton, a disappointing fourth at the Olympics last month, lost out by just 34 points to Hyleas Fountain - the American silver medallist in Beijing. Last year's world bronze medallist did push Games champion Natalya Dobrynska into third place, with a score of 6,439 points to 6,429pts.
MOTOR CYCLING
Leon Camier and Leon Haslam took the victories in the 10th round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Croft, where Shane Byrne fell six points short of sealing his second title success in five years.
