On This Day in Sport (26 September 2009):

1956: Manchester United beat Anderlecht 10-0 in the European Cup, making them the first British club to reach a double-figure score in any European competition.
1960: The first two games in football's League Cup were played, with Bristol Rovers taking on Fulham and West Ham meeting Charlton.
1965: Franz Beckenbauer made his international debut for West Germany. The defender went on to become his country's most famous captain and won 102 caps. He lifted the World Cup as a player in 1974 and won it as a manager in 1990.
1983: Australia II won the America's Cup from US yacht Liberty at Newport, Rhode Island. The trophy had been in the hands of the New York Yacht Club since the competition began in 1851.
2003: Malcolm Glazer, owner of Super Bowl champions the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, increased his stake in Manchester United plc to 3.17%. The American tycoon has since taken full ownership of the club.
2004: Great Britain were beaten 3-2 by Austria in their Davis Cup World Group play-off tie, after Greg Rusedski lost to Stefan Koubek.
2006: An independent disciplinary commission suspended Jonathan Barnett's agents licence for 18 months, nine months of which are suspended, and fined him £100,000 for breaching Football Association rules regarding illegal approaches following the Ashley Cole tapping-up case involving Chelsea. Barnett subsequently lost an appeal but had his ban reduced to 12 months.

Tyson Gay again had too much power for Asafa Powell when beating him over 100 metres in the Daegu International meeting. Gay coasted to his 21st sub-10 second performance when he repeated his victory in Shanghai last Sunday with a time of 9.94seconds. The American established a 6-1 winning ratio ahead of Powell, the former world record holder, who clocked 10.00secs.
