1930: Amateur golfer Bobby Jones completed a unique `grand slam' when he captured the US Amateur Championship to add to the British Amateur Championship, the Open Championship and US Open.
1950: Joe Louis failed to regain the world heavyweight title, 18 months after announcing his retirement, when he was out-pointed by Ezzard Charles in New York.
1987: Europe's Ryder Cup team made history by inflicting the first home defeat on the United States since the tournament began in 1927. The Europeans, under captain Tony Jacklin, won 15-13 to retain the title in Ohio.
2000: Great Britain's Dean Macey ended the opening day of the decathlon at the Sydney Olympics just eight points off top spot after shattering his personal best in the 400 metres by 0.31 seconds to leap from fourth overall to second.
2003: Ricky Hatton made the 10th defence of his WBU light-welterweight title. Aldo Rios retired at the end of ninth round in the Manchester fight.
2004: England A cricketer Graham Wagg pleaded guilty to using cocaine at a disciplinary hearing at Lord's. He was later banned for a year and had his Warwickshire contract terminated.
2005: RBS 6 Nations hero Gavin Henson was ruled out of Wales' autumn Tests through injury.
2006: Barclays renewed their sponsorship of Premier League in deal worth £65.8million until 2010.

MOTOR RACING
Allan McNish came tantalisingly close to a fourth successive Petit Le Mans victory as torrential rain brought the annual event to an early end. McNish and co-driver Dindo Capello led the 1,000-mile race in their Audi R15 TDi for the opening four hours following a superb first lap from the Scot after starting from third on the grid.
ATHLETICS
Britain's Andy Baddeley won the Fifth Avenue Mile but compatriot Lisa Dobriskey was denied a successful defence of her women's title. Baddeley became the first British winner of the men's race since Matthew Yates in 1991 when he edged out Kenya's Boaz Lalang on the line to win in three minutes 51.8 seconds.
ARCHERY
British archer Simon Terry claimed silver in the men's recurve at the FITA World Cup Grand Final in Copenhagen. Terry made the gold medal match but went down 108-105 to Italy's Marco Galiazzo, a former Olympic champion.
CYCLING
Briton Nicole Cooke's defence of the women's World Championship road race title ended in the most dispiriting fashion on Saturday as she withdrew midway through the event in Mendrisio. Cooke, who has been struggling with the after-effects of a virus, was well off the pace when she pulled out 45 miles in, leaving compatriot Emma Pooley to carry the flag for Team GB.
