1857: The first football team, Sheffield FC, were formed at a meeting of Cambridge University old boys.
1976: Britain's James Hunt won the Formula One world title with third place in the Japanese Grand Prix, securing the championship by one point from Niki Lauda. The Austrian had quit the race at Fuji in torrential rain, fearing a crash just 11 weeks after being badly burned in a race accident.
1987: Frank Bruno stopped 37-year-old Joe Bugner from regaining the British heavyweight boxing title at White Hart Lane.
2000: Tanni Grey-Thompson collected her third gold medal of the Paralympics in Sydney when the Cardiff-born wheelchair athlete added the T53 classification women's 200 metres to the 100m and 800m titles she won earlier in the week.
2006: Leeds confirmed the appointment of Dennis Wise as manager, with Gus Poyet his assistant.
2010 Ashley Cole says he came close to leaving Chelsea this summer following his high-profile divorce, but was persuaded to stay by Carlo Ancelotti

CYCLING
Great Britain enjoyed a dominant final day at the European Track Championships as Laura Trott, Ed Clancy, Victoria Pendleton and Matt Crampton all claimed gold in Apeldoorn. Having taken a hat-trick of first places on day one, Team GB ended the event with seven golds, providing a timely boost for the host nation's qualification points tally for London 2012. Pendleton, who put in a disappointing performance in Saturday's women's sprint, was much improved in the keirin, winning each of her heats and taking the final by a bike length.
RALLYING
Reigning champion Sebastien Loeb won the RACC Rally de Espana to edge clear of title rival Mikko Hirvonen ahead of next month's season finale in Wales. Frenchman Loeb, who has won all seven championships since 2004, claimed his seventh victory on Spanish soil ahead of Finland's Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala.
ATHLETICS
Haile Gebrselassie returned to winning ways on Sunday with a convincing victory in the BUPA Great Birmingham Run. The 38-year-old Ethiopian dropped out of last month's BMW Berlin Marathon during the race because of illness, but was back to form over half-marathon distance today, winning easily in one hour, one minute and 29 seconds.
SWIMMING
Former World Championship silver medallist Fran Halsall won gold in the 100 metres individual medley and James Goddard set a new British record in the 200m event as Great Britain concluded the FINA World Cup in Berlin with 13 medals.
