1964: The 18th Olympics opened in Tokyo.
1991: The inaugural meeting of football's newly-formed Premier League was held.
1999: Alan Shearer's 28th goal in 54 internationals helped England to a 2-1 win over Belgium at the Stadium of Light. Meanwhile, Gareth Barry hit a hat-trick for England Under-18s in a 9-0 win over San Marino.
2001: Australia cancelled their rugby league tour to Great Britain because of terrorism fears in the wake of 9/11. Six days later they went back on the decision.
2002: Sunderland appointed Howard Wilkinson as their new manager.
2003: Matthew Hayden scored a then Test world record 380 for Australia against Zimbabwe in Perth. Brian Lara surpassed that score with 400 not out against England in 2004.
2004: Leigh Centurions finally won promotion to Super League after a 32-16 victory over Whitehaven earned them the National League One title.
2005: Director of football Velimir Zajec, who was caretaker manager between November 2004 and April 2005 after the departure of Harry Redknapp, resigned from Portsmouth for personal reasons just a year after joining them.
2006: Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton was fined £2,000 and warned as to his future conduct by the Football Association after admitting a charge of improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute by dropping his shorts to Everton fans at Goodison Park.

James Wade claimed his fifth major title with a 6-3 win over Adrian Lewis in the final of the Bodog.com World Grand Prix in Dublin on Sunday night. Wade had started the stronger and moved into a 4-2 lead, although the action was overshadowed to an extent by an angry confrontation between the two players after Lewis was distracted mid-throw.
MOTOR CYCLING
Jorge Lorenzo has secured his first MotoGP title after finishing third in the Malaysian round of the series at Sepang. The Spaniard needed to finish ninth or better to clinch the championship on his Fiat Yamaha, helped by the absence of his closest rival and compatriot Dani Pedrosa due to an injury suffered in the last MotoGP round in Japan. Reigning champion Valentino Rossi, a team-mate of Lorenzo at Fiat Yamaha, won the race in a time of 41 minutes 03.448 seconds, with Rossi's fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso second for Repsol Honda.
