1936: Duncan Edwards was born. The youngest England
football international since the 19th century when he made his debut,
aged 18, against Scotland in 1955. He died of injuries sustained in
the Munich air disaster in 1958.
1951: The first competitive football match was played
under floodlights at The Dell, a reserve contest between Southampton
and Tottenham.
1975: Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali fought the `Thrilla
in Manila' for the world heavyweight title. Defending champion Ali
emerged the victor at the end of 14 rounds of unrelenting action.
1998: Former Arsenal boss George Graham became the new
manager of Tottenham.
2000: Boxer Audley Harrison grabbed Great Britain's
10th gold medal of the Sydney Olympics when he beat Mukhtarkhan
Dildabekov in the super-heavyweight division at Darling Harbour.
2005: Former New Zealand wing Jonah Lomu signed for
Cardiff Blues.
2006: Norwich sacked their manager Nigel Worthington. |
