1894: Airdrieonians beat Dundee Wanderers 15-1 in a Scottish Second Division game to record the biggest win in British league football.
1987: New Zealand established what was then a world record score for a rugby union international when they won 106-4 against Japan in Tokyo.
1997: Former Rangers and Liverpool boss Graeme Souness was appointed manager of Portuguese giants Benfica. He stayed at the club less than two years.
2000: Alec Stewart was one of nine former Test captains named in a match-fixing report published by India's Central Bureau of Investigation. Stewart was later cleared of all allegations by the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit.
2004: Berti Vogts resigned as Scotland manager after a disappointing two and a half years in charge.
2006: Pakistan bowler Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years by a doping tribunal after testing positive for nandrolone during the ICC Champions Trophy. Team-mate Mohammad Asif was banned for one year for testing positive for nandrolone.
