ATHLETICS
Haile Gebrselassie is targeting a second world record
this year after smashing his own marathon mark in Germany on Sunday.
The 35-year-old Ethiopian won the real-Berlin Marathon for the third
successive time in a phenomenal time of two hours, three minutes and
59 seconds.
MOTOR CYCLING
Valentino Rossi savoured a hard-fought sixth MotoGP
title and first since 2005 after wrapping up the crown with victory
in Motegi on Sunday. The Italian Fiat Yamaha rider claimed his eighth
victory of the season and fifth in a row ahead of 2007 champion Casey
Stoner, who had to win and hope Rossi finished off the podium to keep
the title race going for at least next week's race in Australia. But
Stoner finished 1.943 seconds adrift of Rossi, with Spanish duo Dani
Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo in third and fourth. Alessandro Ballan was
crowned world road-race champion in Varese on Sunday. The Italian
gave the home crowd something to cheer when he attacked in the
closing two kilometres. Having opened up a gap he held on to take the
raibow jersey by three seconds, completing the 260km course in six
hours, 37 minutes and 30 seconds. Ballan's team-mate Damiano Cunego
outsprinted Dane Matti Breschel to take second. |
