On This Day in Sport (30 September 2008):

1961: Benny `Kid' Paret won the world welterweight boxing title, beating Emile Griffith on points in New York. Six months later in a rematch, Paret was stopped in round 12 and died from his injuries.
1997: While Manchester United announced record club profits of £27.6million and a link-up with BSkyB and Granada to create the MUTV channel, their captain Roy Keane was diagnosed as having a snapped cruciate ligament which would keep him out for the rest of the season.
1999: Rugby league sides Sheffield and Huddersfield announced they were to merge to form one Super League club - the Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants. But less than 12 months later, lack of support from Sheffield led to the club announcing their intention to play matches only in Huddersfield and drop Sheffield from their name.
2000: Iain Percy won Britain's ninth Olympic gold medal of Sydney 2000 when he sailed to glory in the men's Finn class - while Ian Walker and Mark Covell won silver in the Star class.
2002: Bulldozers began demolishing the old Wembley stadium - marking the end of an era for one of the most famous stadiums in the world.
2003: Arsenal managed only a goalless draw at Lokomotiv Moscow, extending their winless Champions League streak to seven matches.
