1928: Two years after becoming the first man to hit three home runs in a World Series game, Babe Ruth repeated the feat, hitting three `homers' against the St Louis Cardinals, the same team who were on the receiving end in 1926.
1988: Jackie Milburn, one of Newcastle's greatest footballers and scorer of both goals in their 1951 FA Cup win, died aged 64.
1998: The Football Association were fined 60,000 Swiss francs by UEFA for racist chanting by England fans at Sweden's Henrik Larsson and damage caused to the Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm by supporters after a 2-1 defeat in a Euro 2000 qualifier.
