1930: Sports promoter Mark McCormack was born. He went on to found and head the International Management Group, which became the biggest company of its type in the world. McCormack's first client was international golfer Arnold Palmer, an old school friend. McCormack died aged 72 in 2003.
1986: Manchester United appointed Alex Ferguson as manager. He went on top become the most successful manager in English football history and was knighted for services to football after leading the club to an unprecedented treble in 1999.
1998: The Football Association fined Paul Ince for his V-sign after being sent off in England's 2-1 Euro 2000 qualifying defeat against Sweden.
2003: Dwain Chambers was facing a minimum two-year ban from athletics, after it was revealed his B sample test for new designer steroid THG was positive.
2006: Paul Azinger was named United States Ryder Cup captain for the 2008 event at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky.

CYCLING
Sir Chris Hoy was beaten into second place in the keirin at the Track World Cup event in Astana, Kazakhstan. The four-time Olympic champion, who last month withdrew from the European Championships through illness, came second to Christos Volikakis of Greece in his favourite event. Jason Kenny failed to qualify for the final.
