1964: The 18th Olympics opened in Tokyo.
1991: The inaugural meeting of football's newly-formed Premier League was held.
1999: Alan Shearer's 28th goal in 54 internationals helped England to a 2-1 win over Belgium at the Stadium of Light. Meanwhile, Gareth Barry hit a hat-trick for England Under-18s in a 9-0 win over San Marino.
2001: Australia cancelled their rugby league tour to Great Britain because of terrorism fears in the wake of 9/11. Six days later they went back on the decision.
2002: Sunderland appointed Howard Wilkinson as their new manager.
2003: Matthew Hayden scored a then Test world record 380 for Australia against Zimbabwe in Perth. Brian Lara surpassed that score with 400 not out against England in 2004.
2004: Leigh Centurions finally won promotion to Super League after a 32-16 victory over Whitehaven earned them the National League One title.
2005: Director of football Velimir Zajec, who was caretaker manager between November 2004 and April 2005 after the departure of Harry Redknapp, resigned from Portsmouth for personal reasons just a year after joining them.
2006: Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton was fined £2,000 and warned as to his future conduct by the Football Association after admitting a charge of improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute by dropping his shorts to Everton fans at Goodison Park.

ATHLETICS
Mary Keitany justified her position as pre-race favourite by easily winning the IAAF World Half Marathon title in Birmingham on Sunday morning. The Kenyan led from start to finish and was challenged only by Ethiopia's Aberu Kebede, who she lost just before the 10 kilometre mark to to win by a comfortable margin in a time of one hour, six minutes and 36 seconds. Keitany, who smashed Paula Radcliffe's championship record, was followed home by team-mate Philes Ongori who passed the tired Kebede in the closing stages and beat her by a second in 1hr 7min 38sec.
MOTOR CYCLING
Stuart Easton claimed his second MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship victory after a tense battle with champion Leon Camier at Oulton Park. Easton started on pole but lost the lead to James Ellison, returning to the head of the field on lap five after a red flag on the previous lap due to Karl Harris' nasty crash.
