On This Day in Sport (07 November 2011):

1978: Former world heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney died. He beat Jack Dempsey on points to win the title in 1926 and a year later retained it with another points win over Dempsey. Tunney retired as undefeated champion in 1928.
1987: Manchester City's Tony Adcock, Paul Stewart and David White all scored hat-tricks in their team's 10-1 demolition of Huddersfield. It was the fifth time three players had scored hat-tricks in the same Football League match.
2004: Paula Radcliffe won the New York Marathon.
2010 Jenson Button hails the swift actions of his police driver after being confronted by an armed gang in Sao Paulo

Jo Pavey further pressed her claim for selection at next year's London Olympics with a top-10 finish in the New York marathon. Running in just her second marathon, the 38-year-old reached Central Park in a time of two hours 28 minutes and 42 seconds to finish ninth.
Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai smashed the course record to win the New York Marathon. Mutai continued his impressive recent form to beat Tesfaye Jifar's decade-old record by more than two minutes as he reached the finish line in Central Park in a time of two hours five minutes and six seconds. Mutai's countryman and namesake Emmanuel Mutai was second, 22 seconds further back, with Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede third.
MOTOR CYCLING
Casey Stoner pipped Ben Spies to the line to take a dramatic victory at the final round of the MotoGP season in Valencia.
CYCLING
Sir Chris Hoy won his second medal of the track cycling World Cup in Kazakhstan with gold in the sprint. The four-time Olympic champion added victory in the sprint to the silver he won in the keirin. And there was another medal for the British team as Dani King claimed silver in the women's omnium. It meant a total of three medals in a relatively low-key weekend for the British teams at the first of the four-event series.
