ATHLETICS
Ireland's Martin Fagan warmed up for the ING New York City Marathon in three weeks with a victory in the Boston Athletic Association Half Marathon. The Irish Olympian and national half marathon record holder won a duel with Kenya's Philemon Terer, completing the 13.1 mile course around the streets of Boston and Brookline in Massachusetts in one hour two minutes 21 seconds. Fagan, who lowered John Treacy's Irish record to 1:00.57 earlier this year in Holland, joined the front-running Terer in the first mile and the pair quickly opened a gap on the field after opening miles of 4:43 and 4:41.
Kenya's Joan Aiyabei produced a brilliant display to win the ASICS Grand 10K Berlin. The 30-year-old crossed the line in a course-record time of 33 minutes 48 seconds and claimed afterwards she could have gone even faster had the conditions been more favourable.
Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru picked up a $100,000 bonus for breaking the Chicago Marathon course record in a time of two hours five minutes and 41 seconds. The 22-year-old finished well ahead of Moroccan Abderrahim Goumri who clocked 2:06:04 with his fellow Kenyan Vincent Kipruto third in 2:06:08.
