1942: Golfer Tom Weiskopf was born. Weiskopf won the Open at Troon in 1973 with a score of 276, which equalled the championship best.
2001: Members of the Professional Footballers' Association voted in favour of a strike over the distribution of television revenue, which was not carried out as the dispute was eventually settled by the end of the month.
2004: Former Liverpool and England captain Emlyn Hughes died at the age of 57.
2006: The Football Association were fined by UEFA for the improper conduct of England fans before a Euro 2008 qualifying match against Croatia in Zagreb.
2010 Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider reportedly retires from international cricket after fleeing to London due to death threats from match-fixers

WEIGHTLIFTING
Zoe Smith set two personal bests at the World Weightlifting Championships in Paris before deciding against attempting the Olympic qualifying A standard. The 17-year-old from Greenwich lifted 92kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk to record a total of 204kg - three kilograms more than she managed in May when she claimed silver at the World Youth Championships with a combined lift of 201kg (91kg and 110kg).
