1871: Twelve teams agreed to inaugurate the FA Cup competition suggested by Football Association secretary Charles Allcock.
1968: American Bob Beamon shattered the world long jump record to set a new mark of 8.90 metres. His record would stand for nearly 23 years.
2003: England's Rugby World Cup dream moved a step closer towards reality after they defeated South Africa 25-6 at Subiaco Oval in their quarter-final.
2004: Warwickshire's Graham Wagg was banned until January 2006 after failing a drugs test.
2005: Former Fulham and England star Johnny Haynes, the first £100-a-week footballer, died aged 71.

ATHLETICS
World champion Bai Xue continued her brilliant form this year with another stellar performance when defending her Beijing Marathon title. Her victory came two months after her gold medal success in Berlin, and she headed a Chinese clean sweep today by finishing ahead of Zhang Xin and Zhu Xiaolin. The 20-year-old won a testing race in a time of two hours, 34 minutes and 44 seconds with Zhang clocking 2:34:49 and Xiaolin 2:34:55.
