On This Day in Sport (19 October 2009):

1957: Celtic thrashed Rangers 7-1 in the final of the Scottish League Cup at Hampden Park, John McPhail scoring a hat-trick.
1958: Stirling Moss beat Mike Hawthorn in the one and only Moroccan Grand Prix. Hawthorn's second place however was good enough to take the world title by one point, condemning Moss to the runner-up spot for the fourth successive year.
1993: Norwich stunned three-time European Cup winners Bayern Munich with a 2-1 victory in their UEFA Cup tie at the Olympic Stadium. Mark Bowen and Jeremy Goss netted for the Canaries, who progressed to the third round 3-2 on aggregate.
2004: The Professional Footballers' Association announced Adrian Mutu had admitted testing positive for cocaine and would not require a `B' sample to be tested. He was later sacked by Chelsea.

Jenson Button finally has his hands on the Formula One world title following a pulsating Brazilian Grand Prix. A combination of brilliant driving and dramatic incidents elevated Button into fifth place, with his title rivals Sebastian Vettel and Rubens Barrichello finishing fourth and eighth respectively.
SWIMMING
Eleanor Simmonds produced a dominant performance to win the S6 400m freestyle title at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Reykjavik. The 14-year-old, in a time of five minutes 37.31 seconds, led home fellow Briton Natalie Jones to claim her first European title.
GYMNASTICS
Britain's Beth Tweddle hailed her gold medal at the Gymnastics World Championships in London as the biggest achievement of her career. The 24-year-old from Liverpool bounced back from her failure to reach the final in her strongest event on the uneven bars with a superb display in the floor exercise to win her second world title.
ATHLETICS
Kenyan Gilbert Yegon won the Amsterdam Marathon and set a new course record on a brilliant debut over the distance. Yegon completed the course in two hours, six minutes and 19 seconds, and despite suffering from cramp in the closing stages that meant he had struck one second off the previous record set by Haile Gebrselassie four years ago.
MOTORCYCLING
Casey Stoner claimed his third successive win at the Australian Grand Prix on a day when Valentino Rossi moved a step closer to retaining his FIM MotoGP World Championship title. Fiat Yamaha rider Rossi finished second behind Stoner but more importantly saw his team-mate and nearest title rival Jorge Lorenzo fail to make it beyond the first corner after the Spaniard tangled with Nicky Hayden.
