On This Day in Sport (20 October 2009):

1990: 21 Arsenal and Manchester United players were involved in a mass brawl which resulted in both clubs being fined #50,000 and a deduction of two points for Arsenal and one for United.
1996: Newcastle inflicted Manchester United's biggest defeat in 12 years, beating them 5-0 at St James' Park. But it was the Red Devils who went on to win the Premiership title, with the Magpies in second place.
2003: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a two-match touchline ban and fined #10,000 after being charged with misconduct by the Football Association following a verbal attack on referee Jeff Winter.
2004: Formula One's contract recognition board refused to ratify Jenson Button's move from BAR to Williams. He was forced to stay with BAR, and after an about-turn Button spent most of the 2005 season trying to extricate himself from an agreement with Williams.
2005: UK Sport announced that a footballer - who they did not name - had tested positive for cocaine and was serving a six-month suspension.
2006: Liverpool's Beth Tweddle won the gold medal in the uneven bars competition at gymnastics' world championships in Aarhus, Denmark
