2001: Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson came within one point of equalling the world record points tally for an international match when he scored 44 for England in the 134-0 win over Romania at Twickenham.
2005: New Zealand won the right to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup finals.
2006: Hungarian football great Ferenc Puskas died aged 79.

Mark Gleghorne scored a goal on his debut while East Grinstead team-mate Ashley Jackson added two more to lift Great Britain to a 3-1 win over Belgium in Antwerp. Gleghorne came off the bench to get the opener in the 13th minute, having had to wait through an 11-month injury battle to make his first appearance at this level.
