On This Day in Sport (21 October 2009):

1990: Twenty-one Arsenal and Manchester United players were involved in a mass brawl which resulted in both clubs being fined £50,000 and a deduction of two points for Arsenal and one point for United.
1996: Newcastle gave champions Manchester United their biggest defeat in 12 years, beating them 5-0 at St James' Park. But it was the Red Devils who went on to win the Premiership title, with the Magpies in second place.
2003: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a two-match touchline ban and fined £10,000 after being charged with misconduct by the Football Association, following a verbal attack on referee Jeff Winter.
2004: Formula One's contract recognition board refused to ratify Jenson Button's move from BAR to Williams. He was forced to stay with BAR, and after an about-turn Button spent most of the 2005 season trying to extricate himself from an agreement with Williams.
2005: UK Sport announced that a footballer - who they did not name - had tested positive for cocaine and was serving a six-month suspension.

SWIMMING
Eleanor Simmonds was among eight British gold medal winners at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Reykjavik. Sam Hynd, Heather Frederiksen, Anthony Stephens, Craig Rodgie, Stephanie Bird and Matthew Walker were the other winners, along with the women's 34 point 4x100m medley relay team, while there were also five silvers and a bronze. Double Paralympic champion Simmonds took her second gold medal of the competition in the women's S6 50m freestyle.
