On This Day in Sport (22 October 2009):

1878: Broughton and Swinton played in the first floodlit rugby match.
1966: England's David Bryant won the singles title at the inaugural World Bowls Championship in Sydney. The event was organised because the sport had been left out of that year's Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.
1972: The career of England and Stoke goalkeeper Gordon Banks was cut short when he lost an eye following a car crash near his home.
2000: Peter Taylor was put in temporary charge of England for the friendly against Italy.
2003: Sprinter Dwain Chambers denied taking performance-enhancing drugs. He was banned for two years the following February for taking tetrahydrogestrinone (THG).
2004: Adrian Mutu claimed he was tempted into taking drugs by the belief it would improve his sex life. He was soon to be sacked by Chelsea. 2005: Hearts parted company with manager George Burley, citing ``irreconcilable differences''. 2006: Fernando Alonso retained his F1 drivers' title with second place in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.

CYCLING
Sprint queen Victoria Pendleton once again held off the challenge of the young pretenders to her crown with a second victory in two days at the British National Track Championships in Manchester. The 29-year-old Olympic champion from Stotfold, Bedfordshire, added the sprint title to her opening day win in the women's 500metres time-trial as she continued her preparations for next week's Track World Cup.
SWIMMING
Eleanor Simmonds was among six British gold medal winners as she claimed her third title at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Reykjavik. As well as Simmonds, Heather Frederiksen, Stephanie Millward, Robert Welbourn, Sascha Kindred and Daniel Pepper also topped the podium. Simmonds claimed victory in the SM6 200m individual medley just ahead of team-mate Natalie Jones in a new world record time of three minutes and 11.82 seconds, with her team-mate also dipping under the old world mark in 3mins 12.09secs.
