1959: Joe Baker made football history when he became the first player from outside the Football League to play for England. The Hibernian star scored in the 2-1 win over Northern Ireland at Wembley.
1990: Fred Daly, the only Irish golfer to win the Open Championship, died at the age of 79. The former Ryder Cup player won at Hoylake in 1947.
1998: Goals from Darren Anderton and Paul Merson sealed a 2-0 win for England over the Czech Republic in a friendly international at Wembley.
2001: Britain's Lennox Lewis regained the WBC, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles with a fourth-round knockout of Hasim Rahman in Las Vegas.
2005: Roy Keane leaves Manchester United after 12-and-a-half years at the club following a fall-out with Sir Alex Ferguson.
