1900: Douglas Jardine, the England Test cricket captain at the centre of the 'Bodyline' controversy in 1932-33, was born. He died in 1958, aged 57.
1915: William Gilbert (WG) Grace died at the age of 67.
1987: Lester Piggott was jailed for income tax offences. He was released after serving a third of his three-year sentence.
1988: Henry Armstrong, the only boxer to hold world titles at three different weights simultaneously, died.
1999: Kanu hit a stunning hat-trick in the final 15 minutes as Arsenal came from 2-0 down to beat Chelsea 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.
2005: David Beckham was sent off in Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat by Valencia for sarcastically applauding the referee.
2006: Macclesfield appointed former England midfielder Paul Ince as their new player-manager.

SWIMMING
Eleanor Simmonds clinched her fourth title as Great Britain continued their dominant performance of the IPC European Swimming Championships in Reykjavik, Iceland. Heather Frederiksen, Matthew Walker, Louise Watkin and Daniel Pepper also won titles as Britain claimed five gold, six silver and three bronze medals on the fifth day of competition. Double Paralympic champion Simmonds claimed the women's S6 100 metres freestyle title in one minute 17.57 seconds, beating team-mate Natalie Jones to the wall.
BADMINTON
Chris Adcock and Robert Blair pulled off a stunning win over seventh seeds Nathan Robertson and Anthony Clark in the men's doubles second round at the Denmark Open in Odense. Adcock and Blair came from a game down against their England team-mates to win 11-21 23-21 21-18 in 53 minutes, saving two match points.
