MOTOR CYCLING
Valentino Rossi clinched his seventh MotoGP world
title by finishing third in Sunday's race in soggy Sepang behind
Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa. Stoner's second successive race
victory was achieved with a yawning gap of 14.666seconds back to Pedrosa.
SWIMMING
Great Britain claimed six gold medals on the final day
of the IPC European Championships in Iceland to top the table. The
British team won gold through the men's and women's 34 point relay
teams, Jonathan Fox, Sam Hynd, Louise Watkin and Nyree Lewis in
Reykjavik. There were also six silver and three bronze medals for the
British team today to take their total in the competition to 39 gold,
32 silver and 23 bronze. The women's 34 point 4x100m freestyle relay
team of Stephanie Millward, Eleanor Simmonds, Lauren Steadman and
Watkin smashed the European record by 16 seconds with a time of four
minutes 35.45 seconds.
SKIING
Finland's Tanja Poutiainen made a winning start to her
defence of the giant slalom World Cup title in Solden, Austria, on
Saturday - by one hundredth of a second. The Olympic silver medallist
edged out home favourite Kathrin Zettel after finishing the first run
in third place. |
