1917: The National Hockey League (NHL) was formed in Montreal.
1922: St Albans' Billy Minter scored seven goals in an FA Cup tie against Dulwich but ended up on the losing side as the match finished 8-7.
1930: Clapton Orient played Brentford in one of only two Football League matches in history to be played at Wembley.
1986: Mike Tyson became the youngest world heavyweight boxing champion when he beat Trevor Berbick at the age of 20 years and six months.
2003: Jonny Wilkinson's extra-time drop-goal gave England a dramatic 20-17 win over Australia in the rugby union World Cup final.
2006: Gareth Southgate was granted permission by the Premier League Board to remain as Middlesbrough manager until the end of the season, despite not having the requisite formal qualification - the UEFA Pro Licence.

MODERN PENTATHLON
Great Britain added to their medal tally at the Modern Pentathlon World Junior Championships as Freyja Prentice and Lydia Rosling won gold in the women's relay. The pair were fifth at one stage but fought back to secure Britain's third gold from the seven on offer at the event, following their success with Kate French in Saturday's team event and Jamie Cooke's individual gold on Sunday.
