1997: Jacques Villeneuve was crowned Formula One world champion after Ferrari rival Michael Schumacher infamously crashed out while attempting to take the Canadian out of the European Grand Prix at Jerez.
2000: Bradford signed Stan Collymore from Leicester on a free transfer.
2001: Great Britain overcame France 42-12 in their rugby league Test encounter in Agen.
2004: West Brom parted company with manager Gary Megson after he confirmed he would quit at the end of the season.
2006: England were knocked out of the Champions Trophy as a consequence of West Indies beating India by three wickets.

BASEBALL
The New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Sunday to clinch a return to the World Series. Andy Pettitte set a post-season record with his 16th win as the Yankees took an unassailable 4-2 lead in the series and claimed a 40th AL pennant.

Ben Spies won his first FIM Superbike World Championship in a thrilling final round of the season in Portugal. The Yamaha World Superbike team rider, who moves to MotoGP next season, won the first race at Portimao and claimed fifth in race two to claim the title by six points from Nori Haga on the Ducati Xerox machine.
RALLYING
Sebastien Loeb clinched his sixth world rally title with victory in the final race of the season, the Rally of Great Britain.
