1962: Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser became the first woman to swim 100 metres in under one minute when she clocked a time of 59.9 seconds.
1998: St Johnstone reached their first domestic final for 29 years by beating Hearts 3-0 in the League Cup semi-final. They went on to lose to Rangers at Parkhead.
2000: Britain's Tanni Grey-Thompson won her fourth gold medal of the Paralympics in Sydney when she cruised to victory in the T53 classification of the women's 400 metres in a time of 58.74 seconds.
2004: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger agreed a three-year extension to his contract, keeping him at the club until May 2008.
2006: The Football Association council voted in favour of a major restructuring of the organisation. Recommendations included appointing an independent chairman to the FA board, to reduce the board from 12 to 10 members and to award a vote to the chief executive.
