1942: Billy Bremner, an integral part of Leeds' rise
to the top of British football in the 1970s, was born. He died in 1997.
1986: The lightning-fast greyhound Ballyregan Bob was
retired by his owner-trainer George Curtis after he won a world
record 32 races in a row. Bob had not lost a race since August 25, 1984.
1999: Alan Ball was sacked as manager of First
Division Portsmouth.
2001: David Beckham won the BBC Sports Personality of
the Year award.
2003: Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy
equalled Denis Law's European scoring record of 28 goals for the club
in a 2-0 Champions League win over Stuttgart at Old Trafford. He has
since overtaken Law and left the club.
2004: Formula One chiefs struck a deal with
Silverstone's owners to save the British Grand Prix. A five-year
contract ended months of uncertainty and acrimony between the British
Racing Drivers' Club and Bernie Ecclestone's F1 organisation.
2005: England drew Paraguay, Sweden and Trinidad and
Tobago in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup finals. |
