1958: Duncan Edwards, one of the best-known members of the famous 'Busby Babes' Manchester United team, died at the age of 21 after failing to survive the Munich air crash which decimated the United team.
1988: Geet Sethi, playing in the Indian national snooker championship, became the first amateur to register an official maximum 147 break in a tournament.
2000: Mark Hughes, now Blackburn manager, confirmed his retirement from playing international football for Wales after 72 caps and 16 goals.
2004: Legendary Wales, Leeds and Juventus striker John Charles died, aged 72.
2006: Thierry Henry scored a stunning solo goal to clinch a 1-0 Champions League win for Arsenal at Real Madrid - the first victory for an English club at the Bernabeu.

ATHLETICS
Jenny Meadows broke the British 800metres indoor record belonging to Dame Kelly Holmes on Saturday to complete her preparations for the World Indoor Championships in perfect style. Meadows clocked a time of one minute and 59.11 seconds at the Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham, taking a tenth of a second off the mark set by Holmes in Belgium in 2003.
SWIMMING
Jazmin Carlin produced a world-class swim to lead home world silver medallist Jo Jackson and Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington in the 400metres freestyle at the British Gas Great Britain v Germany swim meet in Swansea. The 19-year-old led from the halfway mark to claim an emphatic win in four minutes 06.41 seconds, just 0.22secs outside her best set last year in the era of performance-enhancing suits.
