1863: The first steeplechase under National Hunt rules took place at Market Harborough in Leicestershire.
1927: Ferdinando Minoia and Giuseppe Morandi, driving an OM, won the inaugural Mille Miglia. The race, from Brescia to Rome and back, was the most famous long-distance race of its time.
1959: Mushtaq Mohammad, aged 15 years and 124 days, made his Test cricket debut for Pakistan against West Indies at Lahore. He was the youngest-ever man to play Test cricket, a record that stood until 1996.
1998: England midfielder Paul Gascoigne joined then First Division Middlesbrough from Rangers for #3.45million.
2002: Kenneth Wolstenholme's death was announced. The 81-year-old was fondly remembered for his ``They think it's all over - it is now'' comment in the 1966 World Cup final.
2010 A trademark power surge from Sir Chris Hoy delivered his 10th Track Cycling World Championships title in Copenhagen.

CYCLING
Great Britain's Jason Kenny was beaten to silver in the men's sprint at the Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, Holland on Friday night as France's Gregory Bauge secured a hat-trick of triumphs. After defeating team-mate - and his room-mate this week - Sir Chris Hoy 2-0 in the best-of-three semi-final, Kenny was no match for Bauge in the final.
DIVING
World champion Tom Daley and partner Pete Waterfield were edged into third place at the Diving World Series in Beijing on Friday. Daley and Waterfield had to settle for bronze in the 10m synchro at the famous Water Cube in the second of the four-event series. The British duo scored 459.87 to finish just behind Germany's Sascha Klein and Patrick Hausding with 459.90. Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan of China were clear winners of the gold medal with 502.65.
