On This Day in Sport (27 March 2011):

1953: Annemarie Moser-Proll, the Austrian skier who won a record 62 World Cup races, was born. She also won Olympic downhill gold in 1980.
1988: After more than 1,000 matches in all competitions, former England, Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence announced he would retire at the end of the season at the age of 39.
1989: Referee Kelvin Morton awarded a record five penalties in the Second Division match between Crystal Palace and Brighton. Only two were converted, one by each side, and Palace won 2-1.
2000: An amazing 25,787 fans turned up at the Stadium of Light to watch Sunderland reserves beat Manchester United 2-1.
2004: France's 24-21 victory over England gave them a Grand Slam in rugby union's Six Nations Championship

ROWING
Oxford's stroke Simon Hislop epitomised Oxford's refusal to be beaten as the Dark Blues produced a commanding performance to win the 157th Xchanging Boat Race by four lengths. Hislop, who begins his new career as a junior doctor at Charing Cross Hospital in August, triumphed on the Tideway just 11 months after undergoing surgery for testicular cancer.
CYCLING
Australia enjoyed a stellar penultimate day of the Track Cycling World Championships with gold medals for Anna Meares, Shane Perkins and Michael Freiberg in Apeldoorn, Holland. Meares struck gold in the women's sprint, Perkins in the men's Keirin and Freiberg in the men's omnium as Australia won the title in all three Olympic events taking place today, while Marianne Vos of Holland won the non-Olympic scratch race.
DIVING
Peter Waterfield took bronze for Great Britain in the men's 10m platform final at the Diving World Series in Beijing. China continued their domination of the weekend as Qiu Bo and Cao Yuan finished way out in front in the standings in the gold and silver places respectively, but Waterfield's 546.95 saw him finish third.
TRIATHLON
Australians took gold and silver in today's Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup. Brad Kahlefeldt took gold, with compatriot Brendan Sexton overcoming a 15-second penalty to beat France's David Hauss for second place. The win was Kahlefeldt's third in Mooloolaba and the seventh World Cup title of his career, placing him joint-sixth on the all-time list. Out of the field of 75 men, Great Britain's Stuart Hayes finished eighth after leading in the early stages.
