ATHLETICS
Jessica Ennis won
pentathlon gold at the World Indoor Championships in Doha on
Saturday. The 24-year-old, whose preparations were interrupted by a
foot injury, added the indoor multi-event title to the heptathlon
crown she won outside in Berlin last summer. Ennis stamped her
authority on the competition with a score of 4937 points, the third
best ever recorded.
Lolo Jones came good after a disappointing season so
far to retain her World Indoor 60 metres hurdles title in Doha on
Saturday. Jones, who lost three of her five indoor races on the
European circuit this year, nearly came unstuck in the Aspire Dome,
only making the final as a fastest loser. But the 27-year-old
American produced the goods when it mattered, clocking 7.72 seconds
to finish ahead of Canadian pair Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep.
Dwain Chambers became
only the second British sprinter to win 60 metres gold at the World
Indoor Championships with a convincing victory in Doha on Saturday.
After dominating the heats, Chambers matched the achievement of Jason
Gardener in Budapest six years ago with a winning time of 6.48
seconds - the fastest in the world this year. That was enough to beat
Mike Rodgers of the United States and Daniel Bailey of Antigua, who
recorded 6.53sec and 6.57sec respectively.
HOCKEY
A World Cup campaign which promised so much ended in
anti-climax as England squandered a 3-1 half-time lead to lose 4-3 to
Holland in the third-place play-off in New Delhi. |
