1869: The Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first professional baseball team, played their first match as professionals against Great Western.
1877: Test cricket was inaugurated when James Lillywhite's touring England team met the Australians at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
1990: Playing for New Zealand against Australia at Wellington, Richard Hadlee took five wickets in an innings for the 100th time in his career.
1991: Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergiy Bubka became the first man to clear 20 feet (6.1 metres) indoors.
2001: India won the second Test in Calcutta to end Australia's world-record run of 16 successive Test victories.
2002: Australia won a record 15th consecutive one-day international with a five-wicket World Cup victory over Kenya at Durban.

ATHLETICS
Jenny Meadows may have not won, but her performance in finishing second in the 800 metres at the World Indoor Championships confirmed she is now an established world-class performer. Meadows broke the British record for the second time this year with a time of one minute 58.43 seconds, but lost the gold medal to Russian Mariya Savinova. Savinova caught Meadows in the final 30m to claim victory by a margin of 0.17secs.
Teddy Tamgho set a new world indoor record on his final attempt to take triple jump goal at the World Indoor Championships in Doha. The Frenchman, who had been lying in third, leapt to 17.90 metres to go past the long-standing previous mark of 17.83m shared by Aliecer Urruta and Christian Olsson.
CYCLING
Alberto Contador topped an all-Spanish podium with victory in the Paris-Nice Race to the Sun on Sunday. The Tour de France champion successfully defended his advantage on a final stage won by Amael Moinard (Cofidis) of France to secure the race leader's yellow jersey.
BADMINTON
World number one Lee Chong Wei claimed his first Yonex All England title with victory over Japanese underdog Kenichi Tago on Sunday afternoon. Lee prevailed 21-19 21-19 at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena to become the first non-Chinese men's singles winner since 2003 and only the second Malaysian champion in 44 years.
