1890: Blackburn's William Townley became the first man to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup final, as Rovers trounced Sheffield Wednesday 6-1.
1980: Three-time world champion Nelson Piquet won his first grand prix, in the United States at Long Beach. It was the first of 23 wins for Piquet who went on to win the world title in 1981, 1983 and 1987.
1981: The first London Marathon was staged. Britain's Joyce Smith won the women's race while the men's title was shared by American Dick Beardsley and Norwegian Inge Simonsen, who crossed the line hand in hand.
1988: Lloyd Honeyghan became the first British boxer since Ted `Kid' Lewis in 1917 to regain a world title, beating Jorge Vaca of Mexico with a knockout in the third round of their WBC welterweight bout at Wembley.
2000: The Football Association dished out record £150,000 fines to Leeds and Tottenham for misconduct in their Premiership clash in February.
2001: Sprinter John Skeete was banned for two years by UK Athletics after failing a drug test, even though the governing body accepted he was ``morally innocent''. Skeete's dietary supplement had been tampered with.
2003: The Zimbabwe Cricket Union confirmed their tour of England from May to July that year would go ahead, which allayed fears of any tit-for-tat retaliation for England's decision not to play their World Cup match in Harare earlier in the year because of security fears.
2006: Liverpool confirmed talks with a number of parties regarding future investment, with the club admitting that may include a takeover bid.
