1915: Former England and Yorkshire cricketer Norman Yardley was born. He skippered his national side on 14 of the 20 occasions on which he played for them.
1938: The BBC televised their first rugby match when they covered the Calcutta Cup game between England and Scotland at Twickenham. Scotland won 21-16.
1996: Alan Shearer scored his fifth hat-trick of the season as Blackburn earned a 3-2 Premiership win over Tottenham.
2001: Courtney Walsh became the first bowler to take 500 Test wickets when he dismissed South African batsman Jacques Kallis in the second Test in Trinidad.
2004: A consortium headed by local businessman Gerald Krasner bought financially-troubled Leeds.
2005: Celtic won the CIS Insurance Cup with 3-0 win over Dunfermline at Hampden Park with goals from Maciej Zurawski , Shaun Maloney and Dion Dublin.
