CYCLING
Nick Nuyens was crowned 2011 Tour of Flanders champion
after outsprinting Sylvain Chavanel and Fabian Cancellara to seal the
biggest victory of his career. The Saxo Bank Sungard rider worked his
way into the elite 12-man group at the foot of the Bosberg and only
he and Chavanel (Quick-Step) could react when Cancellara (Leopard
Trek) attacked inside the final four kilometres of action.
MOTOR SPORT
Defending champion Jason Plato led every lap of the
first two races in his Silverline Chevrolet to start the 2011 BTCC
season with a bang. The first round of the new season took place on
the Indy configuration at Brands Hatch and Plato had initially played
down his chances of winning race one from the second row of the grid
on a track notorious for the lack of overtaking opportunities.
MOTOR CYCLING
Reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo was handed victory at
his home MotoGP race on a dramatic wet afternoon in Spain which saw
former world champions Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner clash. Yamaha
rider Lorenzo was able to ease away to a comfortable victory at Jerez
after Rossi crashed into Stoner after an ill-advised overtaking
manoeuvre at the end of lap six. Ducati rider Rossi had stormed
through the pack after starting the race in 12th place as he used all
his experience and was able to continue but the collision ended
Repsol Honda rider Stoner's race.
ATHLETICS
Sonia Samuels finished third on her half-marathon
debut - but questioned her performance at Sunday's Vattenfall Berlin
event. The Sale Harrier became the first Briton -male or female - to
earn a podium finish in the world class event, won by Valentine
Kipketer in a time of one hour, 10 minutes and 12 seconds. Kenya's
Kipketer won easily from the highly experienced Fate Tola, who
clocked 1:11.40 on a hot morning, while Samuels - who deliberately
started slowly - came home in 1:12:56. |
