1990: Great Britain suffered their first home defeat by France since 1967, losing the rugby league Test 25-18 at Headingley.
1993: National Hunt jockey Peter Scudamore retired after riding 1,677 winners.
1994: Former Arsenal and Rangers forward Albert Gudmundsson, thought to be Iceland's first professional footballer, died aged 70.
2004: Chris Sutton and Alan Thompson signed new two-year contract extensions with Celtic.
2005: Portsmouth appointed Alain Perrin as manager to succeed Harry Redknapp.
2006: The Football Association charged England full-back Ashley Cole's agent Jonathan Barnett with breaches of their rules.
2010 Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola chose to praise the human side of Lionel Messi after the Argentinian winger destroyed Arsenal with a remarkable four-goal performance at the Nou Camp.

Mark Cavendish avoided the carnage to take an impressive sprint victory at Scheldeprijs. The 'Manx Missile' was overjoyed to take the win at the scene of his first professional victory in 2007. The HTC-Highroad rider held off Denis Galimzyanov (Katusha) and Yauheni Hutarovich (FDJ) to win comfortably as all hell broke loose behind him.
