1953: Annemarie Moser-Proll, the Austrian skier who
won a record 62 World Cup races, was born. She also won Olympic
downhill gold in 1980.
1988: After more than 1,000 matches in all
competitions, former England, Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray
Clemence announced he would retire at the end of the season at the
age of 39.
1989: Referee Kelvin Morton awarded a record five
penalties in the Second Division match between Crystal Palace and
Brighton. Only two were converted, one by each side, and Palace won 2-1.
2000: An amazing 25,787 fans turned up at the Stadium
of Light to watch Sunderland reserves beat Manchester United 2-1.
2004: France's 24-21 victory over England gave them a
Grand Slam in rugby union's Six Nations Championship |
