On This Day in Sport (27 March 2010):

1953: Annemarie Moser-Proll, the Austrian skier who won a record 62 World Cup races, was born. She also won Olympic downhill gold in 1980.
1988: After more than 1,000 matches in all competitions, former England, Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence announced he would retire at the end of the season at the age of 39.
1989: Referee Kelvin Morton awarded a record five penalties in the Second Division match between Crystal Palace and Brighton. Only two were converted, one by each side, and Palace won 2-1.
2000: An amazing 25,787 fans turned up at the Stadium of Light to watch Sunderland reserves beat Manchester United 2-1.
2004: France's 24-21 victory over England gave them a Grand Slam in rugby union's Six Nations Championship

Top-ranked British showjumper Ben Maher warmed up for tomorrow's Rolex World Cup qualifier in s'Hertogenbosch, Holland by winning a major class at the four-day show. Maher, riding Wonderboy III, took the Rabobank Prijs in emphatic fashion.
CYCLING
Great Britain's men's pursuit team had to settle for silver at the World Track Championships on Friday night. The British quartet of Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Andy Tennant and Ben Swift were edged out by Australia in the gold-medal race. The Aussies led from the early stages but when they lost a man after three of the four kilometres it appeared GB had a great chance of gold.
