1999: Wales wrecked England's Grand Slam dream at Wembley and beat them 32-31 as Scott Gibbs scored a dazzling solo try in injury time. As a result, Scotland were crowned Five Nations champions for the first time since 1990.
2000: South Africa sacked captain Hansie Cronje as United Cricket Board chairman Dr Ali Bacher revealed the player accepted money for match-fixing.
2001: Australia striker Archie Thompson scored 13 goals as the Socceroos beat American Samoa by a world-record 31-0 in their World Cup qualifier.
2001: Forty three people died in a stampede at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, during the Kaizer Chiefs' Premier League match with arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.
2004: Phil Mickelson shot a final-round 69 to win the Masters by one shot from Ernie Els, collecting his first major title.
