SWIMMING
World Championship silver medallist Fran Halsall experienced an intense few minutes which saw her retain her 100metres freestyle crown before making a hasty return to the pool to qualify for the 100m butterfly final at the British Gas Swimming Championships in Sheffield. The 19-year-old was runner-up to Britta Steffen in the 100m freestyle in Rome last summer and held off Loughborough ITC team-mate Amy Smith to touch in 54.71seconds. Lizzie Simmonds rated her victory over world champion Gemma Spofforth in the 100metres backstroke at the British Gas Swimming Championships as one of the high points of her career. The 19-year-old was seventh at last summer's World Championships in Rome as Spofforth was crowned champion in world record time. However, Simmonds turned the tables at Ponds Forge to lead from start to finish despite a late challenge and touched in 59.43seconds.
