1955: Duncan Edwards, one of Manchester United's legendary `Busby Babes', made his first appearance for England in a 7-2 victory over Scotland at Wembley. He was killed three years later in the Munich air disaster.
1977: Red Rum won his record third Grand National, winning by 25 lengths from Churchtown Boy. Charlotte Brew, on Barony Fort, became the first woman to take part in the race.
1993: Jonathan Davies kicked a record 10 goals as Great Britain's rugby league team set a new Test best victory of 72-6, against France at Swinton.
2002: Jockey Tony McCoy broke Sir Gordon Richards' 55-year record for winners in a season when he recorded his 270th win of the campaign at Warwick.
2003: Wimbledon receive final approval from the Football League for their temporary move to the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes.
2004: Claudio Ranieri named manager of the month for March despite speculation over his position as Chelsea manager.

SWIMMING
Rebecca Adlington gave a masterclass in the 800metres freestyle on Thursday night at the British Gas Swimming Championships in Sheffield as she showed the sort of form that saw her claim the Olympic title in Beijing. The 21-year-old was untouchable at Ponds Forge and already held an unassailable lead after 100m which she reached just 0.3seconds off her own world record pace. Adlington was in a class of her own and touched in eight minutes 21.95 seconds, almost 13 seconds ahead of second-placed Sasha Matthews, her Nova Centurion team-mate with Jazmin Carlin in third.
CYCLING
David Millar claimed overall victory in the Three Days of De Panne race in Belgium. The Team Garmin-Transitions rider was well positioned entering the final day and secured his place atop the general classification standings by triumphing in this afternoon's time-trial.
