1896: The first modern Olympic Games, the brainchild of Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin, got under way in Athens. A total of 59 athletes from 10 nations took part.
1900: James J Jeffries successfully defended the world heavyweight title by knocking out Jack Finnegan after just 55 seconds.
1993: Guy Whittingham's fourth hat-trick of the season, in Portsmouth's 4-0 defeat of Peterborough, took his goal tally to 43 - equalling the club record set by Billy Haines in 1926-27.
1994: The Football Association called off England's friendly against Germany fixed for April 20, the anniversary of Adolf Hitler's birth, because of police intelligence discovering massive demonstrations being planned.
2003: Finland's Kimi Raikkonen was declared the winner of an extraordinary Brazilian Grand Prix which was stopped 18 laps early as Italy's Giancarlo Fisichella was denied his maiden win after an horrific collision involving Jaguar's Mark Webber and Renault's Fernando Alonso.
2004: Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1, 3-2 on aggregate, to reach the Champions League semi-final.
2006: England lost the one-day series against India after their four-wicket defeat in Cochin in the fourth game of a seven-match series gave the hosts an unassailable 4-0 lead.

MOTOR CYCLING
Local favourite Tommy Hill leads the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship after a win and second place from a dramatic opening round at Brands Hatch. Riding the Worx Suzuki, Hill overcame the returning two-time champion and pole-sitter Ryuichi Kiyonari in the opening race. The Japanese rider led for the first two thirds of the race before Hill nosed ahead at Surtees with eight laps remaining and held on take the win by just 0.723 seconds, with James Ellison charging through the pack to finish third.
CYCLING
Fabian Cancellara demonstrated his supreme class to win the Tour of Flanders ahead of home favourite Tom Boonen. The Swiss superstar added the Ronde van Vlaanderen to his long list of honours, which include three Tour de France prologue wins and victory in Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo, with a superb solo success in the the 258 kilometres cobbled classic.
