1938: Australian tycoon Alan Bond was born. He was the man who masterminded Australia's win in the 1983 America's Cup yacht race.
1959: Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vic Rouse became the first Fourth Division player to win a full international cap. He conceded four goals in Wales' 4-1 defeat by Northern Ireland in Belfast.
1991: Former world junior welterweight champion Jack `Kid' Berg died, aged 81.
2000: Manchester United won 3-1 at Southampton to claim their sixth Premier League title in eight years.
2001: Lennox Lewis lost his WBC and IBF heavyweight titles following a shock fifth-round knockout by Hasim Rahman in Johannesburg.
2004: Former Manchester United and West Brom boss Ron Atkinson resigned from media commitments with ITV and The Guardian newspaper after making racist comments about Marcel Desailly off-air during a Champions League semi-final between Chelsea and Monaco.
2006: Newcastle striker Alan Shearer admitted his career had been ended by injury.
2007: Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo was named PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. Celtic clinched the Scottish Premier League title by beating Kilmarnock 2-1 at Rugby Park.
2010 Despite huge debts, Manchester United hold on to top spot in Forbes Magazine's list of the 20 most valuable football clubs.

Great Britain will go into the final day of their World Championship campaign with hopes of a gold medal still alive after a 5-2 victory over Lithuania. After notching seven goals in the first period in the 7-0 thrashing of Estonia, GB again pretty much had the game wrapped up inside 20 minutes.
