1907: Brooklands, the world's first purpose-built motor racing track, was opened. The circuit was built as a result of a ban on racing on Britain's roads.
1907: Tom Reece completed the highest-ever billiards break of 499,135 - which he began on June 3. This was in the days of the now-outlawed `cradle cannon' whereby a player could push the two object balls around the table all day by making a cannon each time.
1957: Althea Gibson of the United States became the first black Wimbledon tennis champion when she beat Darlene Hard to win the women's singles title.
1998: Danny Wilson quit as manager of Barnsley and took over as the new boss at Sheffield Wednesday. He was subsequently sacked after 21 months in charge at Hillsborough.
2000: England were eliminated from the race to host the 2006 World Cup as Germany were awarded the tournament, edging out South Africa by a single vote in a meeting of the FIFA delegates in Zurich.
2002: David Nalbandian became the first player in the Open era to reach the Wimbledon men's final on his tournament debut.
2004: Rangers signed Nacho Novo from Dundee.
2006: England captain Michael Vaughan was ruled out of the Ashes series in Australia due to a knee injury.
