1929: The first British world motor racing champion Mike Hawthorn was born. Less than six months after winning the title, in 1958, he was killed in a car crash in Surrey.
1989: Nick Faldo won his first US Masters title, beating Scott Hoch in a play-off at the second extra hole in Augusta.
2000: A Football League tribunal fined Bolton £45,000 for inducing manager Sam Allardyce to join them from Notts County.
2002: England captain David Beckham suffered a broken foot during Manchester United's Champions League match against Deportivo La Coruna, sparking fears he would not be fit for the World Cup. However, the midfielder recovered to lead his country out against Sweden in Saitama on June 2.
2005: Karen Rolton cracked a century as Australia overpowered India by 98 runs to win the Women's World Cup at Centurion Park.
2006: Guus Hiddink, heavily linked with the England job ahead of Sven-Goran Eriksson's departure after the World Cup, announced he would be the next coach of Russian national team.
