1741: George Stevenson became the first fighter to lose his life as a direct result of a prize fight. He died after a bout with Jack Broughton at Taylor's Booth, Tottenham Court Road, London.
1897: Batley beat St Helens 10-3 in front of 13,492 fans at Headingley to win the first Northern Union Cup (now the Challenge Cup).
1992: Tottenham's Gary Lineker received the Football Writers' Player of the Year award for the second time. He first won it in 1986, while at Everton.
2005: Fernando Alonso won the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
2007: Sri Lanka booked their place in the final of the cricket World Cup after an 81-run win over New Zealand.

DIVING
Tom Daley achieved his highest ever score at an international event to claim silver in the Men's 10m Platform at the final World Series meeting of the season in Guanajuato, Mexico. The reigning world champion drew a 10 from the judges for his new four-and-a-half somersault dive, which gave him the biggest score of the final with over 105 points and an overall total of 562.80.
ICE HOCKEY
Great Britain secured a World Championship medal with a 3-2 win over Poland - with dreams of a gold and promotion to the elite group still alive. Ben O'Connor, whose father Mike was part of the GB team which last secured a place in the top division in 1993, netted the game-winning goal with just six minutes left.
