MOTOR CYCLING
Valentino Rossi ended Casey Stoner's domination in
Qatar as the Fiat Yamaha rider took victory in the opening round of
this season's FIM MotoGP World Championship. Stoner had won every
race at the Losail circuit since he joined the Marlboro Ducati team
in 2007 and looked set to continue that record early on as he powered
into the lead from pole position before he surprisingly crashed out.
That left the stage free for reigning champion Rossi to take the
104th Grand Prix win of a remarkable career.
MODERN PENTATHLON
Great Britain's Mhairi Spence won her first Modern
Pentathlon World Cup medal on Sunday by taking bronze on home soil at
Medway Park. The Scot had a day to remember in Kent, winning the
fencing and knocking down only one fence in the show jumping to go
into the final event, the combined run and shoot, at the head of the pack.
MOTOR CYCLING
Leon Haslam stretched his lead in the FIM Superbike
World Championship after a fine day's work in Valencia. Haslam won
the opening race in the Spanish sun on his Alstare Suzuki before
finishing fourth in a disjointed race two to extend his lead over Max
Biaggi to 18 points after three rounds. Double WSB champion James
Toseland made his first impression since returning to the series from
MotoGP as he picked up a third in race one, while a third British
rider Leon Camier was impressive in race two before crashing out from
the lead.
ATHLETICS
Ethiopia's Atsede Bayisa successfully defended her
Paris marathon title on Sunday in a time of two hours 22 minutes 04
seconds, the fastest time in the world this year. The 22-year-old
posted a personal best and course record to finish well clear of
France's Christelle Daunay, who lowered the national record to
2:24:22, with Ethiopia's Tsegaye Tirfi third in 2:24:51. |
