1924: The FA Cup final between Newcastle and Aston Villa at Wembley was the first time the game had been an all-ticket affair.
2000: Long-serving Coventry goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic announced his retirement from the game.
2001: Scotland defender Colin Hendry was banned for six international matches and fined £4,500 for elbowing San Marino substitute Nicola Albani in the throat during a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park, which turned out to be his 51st and last cap before retirement.
2002: The central Asian republic of Kazakhstan was admitted as UEFA's 52nd member association.
2004: Malcolm Glazer bought a further 4.1million Manchester United shares, increasing his shareholding from 16.69% to 18.25%. He later became controlling shareholder.
2005: The Royal and Ancient Club voted in principal to allow women to compete in the Open Championship.
2006: Wasps announced the signature of prop Phil Vickery on a three-year contract following his release by Gloucester. Vickery was later named England captain by head coach Brian Ashton after recovering from a string of back operations.
2007: Jonathan Woodgate signed a permanent £7million deal with home-town club Middlesbrough having initially joined on loan from Real Madrid. He joined Tottenham in an £8million move in January this year.
2010 Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia goes one better than last year as he storms to victory in the men's London Marathon in a time of two hours, five minutes and 18 seconds

An emotional Mark Todd completed a great career comeback to win the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials and set himself up for possible London Olympic gold. The legendary New Zealand horseman became Badminton's oldest champion, aged 55, after an ice-cool clear round on NZB Land Vision shaded British Olympic hopefuls Piggy French and Mary King.
