On This Day in Sport (28 April 2011):
1923: Bolton and West Ham contested the first FA Cup
final at Wembley. Official receipts gave the attendance as 126,047
but it is estimated that more than 200,000 were in the ground. A
single policeman on a white horse famously kept the crowd back from
the pitch. Bolton won the game 2-0, with David Jack having the honour
of scoring the first goal.
1984: Clive Lloyd became the first West Indian to play
in 100 Test matches as the fifth Test against Australia got under way
in Jamaica.
1990: Wigan's Andy Gregory became only the second
rugby league player to win the Lance Todd Trophy a second time. He
was awarded the coveted prize as man of the match for his
contribution to Wigan's triumph over Warrington in the Challenge Cup
final at Wembley.
1998: West Brom terminated the contract of defender
Shane Nicholson following his admission of a drugs misconduct charge
at a Football Association hearing.
2002: Michael Schumacher opened up a commanding
21-point lead in the Formula One World Championship with his fourth
win of the season in Spain, only the fifth Grand Prix of the year.
2005: England World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson signed a
new three-year deal with Newcastle Falcons.
2006: Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari claimed he
had withdrawn from race to become England manager after the World
Cup. Steve McClaren eventually took over following the departure of
Sven-Goran Eriksson.
2006: Sunderland confirmed they were in discussions
with a consortium led by Niall Quinn regarding a possible takeover.
2007: Australia won an historic third Cricket World
Cup in a row, defeating Sri Lanka by 53 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis
method in Barbados. |
