1741: George Stevenson became the first fighter to lose his life as a direct result of a prize fight. He died after a bout with Jack Broughton at Taylor's Booth, Tottenham Court Road, London.
1897: Batley beat St Helens 10-3 in front of 13,492 fans at Headingley to win the first Northern Union Cup (now the Challenge Cup).
1992: Tottenham's Gary Lineker received the Football Writers' Player of the Year award for the second time. He first won it in 1986, while at Everton.
2005: Fernando Alonso won the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
2007: Sri Lanka booked their place in the final of the cricket World Cup after an 81-run win over New Zealand.

ICE HOCKEY
Great Britain's hopes of winning a second successive World Championship bronze medal were dashed following a 2-1 defeat by Poland. Britain claimed third place in Poland last year - their first medal for eight years - and seemed set for another bronze only to be denied on the final day of their Division One Group B campaign.
JUDO
Euan Burton claimed Great Britain's first medal at the European Judo Championships in Vienna when he secured the third bronze of his career. Burton received a bye in the first round of the -81kg competition and won his first fight against Arutyun Sarkisyan after the Ukrainian was penalised three times.
