1924: Former Newcastle centre-forward Jackie Milburn
was born. Milburn was the uncle of future England internationals
Bobby and Jack Charlton and he represented his country 13 times
himself. He was also a member of three FA Cup-winning sides, scoring
twice in the 1951 final and once in 1955 and was Newcastle's record
goalscorer with 200 until he was passed by Alan Shearer last season.
Milburn died in October 1988 aged 64.
1985: A fire at Valley Parade, home of Bradford,
claimed the lives of 56 people in a match - against Lincoln - which
was supposed to be a celebration of the Bantams' Third Division
championship that season.
2002: David Beckham agreed a new three-year contract
worth a reported £90,000 a week with Manchester United. Little
over a year later he was sold to Real Madrid.
2003: West Ham were relegated from the Premiership
after a 2-2 draw with Birmingham on the final day of the season.
Bolton's 2-1 win over Middlesbrough ensured their survival.
2006: Alan Shearer wore the black and white shirt of
Newcastle for the final time in a testimonial match against Celtic.
2010 Steve McClaren joins Bundsliga side Wolfsburg
after taking FC Twente to their first ever Dutch title. |
