1859: Mayonaise won the 1000 Guineas by 20 lengths - a
British record for a classic.
1870: The first rules of water polo were drawn up by
the London Swimming Association.
1945: Alan Ball was born. Ball was the youngest member
of England's World Cup-winning side in 1966 and was also a manager
with Portsmouth, Manchester City and Southampton. He died on April 25
this year aged 61.
2002: Birmingham beat Norwich on penalties to win the
First Division play-off final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff
and secure a return to the top flight for the first time since 1986.
2004: Dennis Bergkamp signed a one-year contract
extension with Arsenal, seeing him through the 2004-05 season.
2005: Stuart Pearce was appointed manager of
Manchester City after a successful spell as caretaker boss.
2005: Malcolm Glazer moved to within touching distance
of completing his £790million buy-out of Manchester United after
capturing the key 28.9 per cent stake of Irish racing tycoons John
Magnier and JP McManus.
2010 Former Arsenal captain and Portsmouth boss Tony
