1889: The last bare-knuckle world heavyweight boxing contest took place. John L Sullivan beat Jake Kilrain over 75 rounds at Richburg, Mississippi.
1961: Angela Mortimer beat Christine Truman in the first all-British women's singles final at Wimbledon since 1914.
1965: Starting stalls were used for the first time in Britain in the Chesterfield Stakes at Newmarket.
1990: Ferrari won their 100th Formula One race at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, Alain Prost taking the chequered flag.
2002: Former England boss Terry Venables was named as the new manager of Leeds. However, despite a positive start to his reign at Elland Road, he left the club just eight months later following the sale of several key players and a poor run of form.
2004: Peter Taylor was handed the role of England under-21 coach for a second term.
2007: Lewis Hamilton finished third in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for his ninth successive podium finish of the season.
2007: Colin Montgomerie won the European Open at the K Club, beating Niclas Fasth by one shot.
