On This Day in Sport (30 April 2010):

1938: The Preston v Huddersfield FA Cup final was the first to be televised in its entirety by the BBC.
1939: Lou Gehrig set a Major League record when he played his 2,130th consecutive game for New York Yankees. His run of appearances stretched back to June 1925. He died in 1941 of a muscle-wasting disease which became known as Lou Gehrig Syndrome.
1995: Middlesbrough played their last game at Ayresome Park before moving to the Riverside Stadium. They beat Luton 2-1 in a Division One encounter.
2005: Chelsea won the Barclays Premiership title after beating Bolton 2-0 at Reebok Stadium.
2006: England were awarded the 2019 cricket World Cup by the International Cricket Council.
2007: Sam Allardyce resigned as Bolton manager after eight years in charge.
2007: Birmingham and Sunderland were promoted to the Premier League.

Mark Cavendish claimed his second victory of the season by putting in a characteristically explosive sprint on stage two of the Tour de Romandie. The Manxman's form had been called into question in the weeks leading up to the race, but he answered his critics in the best possible way by rounding off a dominant HTC-Columbia lead-out train.
EQUESTRIAN
British eventing chief Yogi Breisner has hailed William Fox-Pitt's "fantastic" feat of completing a set of major four-star titles. Fox-Pitt prepared for his assault on Badminton later this week by landing the Rolex Kentucky crown and £50,000.He is thought to be the first eventer to win the quartet of major four-star competitions, having landed five Burghley titles between 1994 and 2008 while also winning Badminton in 2004 and Luhmuhlen in Germany two years ago.
