1990: Sir Alex Ferguson won his first trophy as Manchester United boss as his team beat Crystal Palace 1-0 in an FA Cup final replay at Wembley. Lee Martin scored the only goal after the first meeting between the sides had ended in a 3-3 draw.
1998: Ron Atkinson, having kept Sheffield Wednesday in the Premiership, left the club for the second time after they announced their intention to appoint a full-time manager.
2000: Arsenal were beaten by Galatasaray in a penalty shoot-out in the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen.
2004: England captain Michael Vaughan injured his knee and was later ruled out of the opening Test against New Zealand after slipping during batting practice.
2006: Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona in the Champions League final in Paris.
2006: Former England skipper Terry Butcher was appointed manager of Sydney FC.
2006: Tottenham agreed a fee of £10.9million for Bayer Leverkusen striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Emily Baldwin ensured British World Cup success when she won the feature class of the Chatsworth International Horse Trials in Derbyshire today. Kent rider Baldwin triumphed in the three-star World Cup qualifier event on Drivetime, a combination that were reserves for Great Britain's World Equestrian Games eventing squad in Kentucky last October.
MOTOR CYCLING
Casey Stoner produced a dominant display to claim his second victory of the season in an incident-packed French MotoGP on Sunday afternoon. Australian Stoner stayed clear of the action behind him to storm home to victory by more than 14 seconds and move up to second place in the riders' standings. The news was not so good for Stoner's Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa who suffered a suspected broken collarbone after crashing out following a coming together with Marco Simoncelli.
ATHLETICS
Haile Gebrselassie saw off the challenge of Chris Thompson to claim his fourth Bupa Great Manchester Run title - and then predicted great things for the Briton. The Ethiopian great only managed to pull away from Thompson in the final two kilometres of the 10km race, winning in 28 minutes 10 seconds as windy conditions put paid to fast times.
HOCKEY
Great Britain cruised to an impressive 4-2 win over New Zealand to take the bronze medal at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. The Commonwealth Games bronze-medallists led against the run of play after 20 minutes through Stephen Jenness but Britain took control thereafter and levelled just before half-time when the recalled Richard Mantell scored from a penalty corner.
