1953: Blackpool come from 3-1 down to beat Bolton 4-3 in the FA Cup final as Stanley Matthews finally collects a winner's medal.
1992: Andy Gregory made history as the first man to win seven rugby league Challenge Cup winner's medals when Wigan carried off the trophy for the fifth successive year.
1999: Leicester retain their Premiership rugby union title with victory over Newcastle.
2000: Formula One driver David Coulthard's private jet crashes, killing both pilots. Coulthard survives.
2005: Nottingham Forest, European champions 25 years earlier, were relegated to League One, English football's third tier.
2007: Manchester United lost their Champions League semi-final against AC Milan 5-3 on aggregate. The Rossoneri went on to win the competition.

ATHLETICS
Usain Bolt posted the world's fourth fastest ever 200 metres time with a dazzling victory at the Jamaica International Invitational meeting in Kingston. Bolt clocked 19.56 seconds for the distance which only himself, with his world records of 19.19sec and 19.30secs, and his predecessor Michael Johnson who ran 19.32sec, have achieved.
GYMNASTICS
World champion Beth Tweddle led Great Britain's women to a team silver medal at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Birmingham. Tweddle delivered serene performances on the uneven bars and floor to help Becky Downie, Nicole Hibbert, Niamh Rippin and Jocelyn Hunt to a total of 168.275 points at the National Indoor Arena. Russia took gold with 169.700 with defending champions Romania third as Britain's women emulated the men's team with a first major championships podium place to rapturous acclaim from the partisan crowd.
