EQUESTRIAN
Australian Paul Tapner held his nerve amid intense pressure and driving rain to be crowned Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials champion for the first time. Tapner, based at Highworth near Swindon, held off the challenge of German Andreas Dibowski, with Britain's Daisy Berkeley - an Olympic bronze medalist in 2008 - third after a pulsating showjumping finale. But there was no fairytale ending for 48-year-old British veteran Mary King. She would have become the oldest Badminton champion in its 61-year history, but four faults on Imperial Cavalier saw her slip from second to fourth.
MOTOR CYCLING
Stuart Easton took his first victory of the season in the opening race of the third round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park before Michael Laverty took his maiden win in a damp second race. Behind them, Worx Suzuki rider Tommy Hill packed in the points, finishing second and third to tighten his grip in the title chase. Hill currently has 125 points to Easton's 76.
